From University Research to ai quanton
ai-quanton was founded in 2013 following a research project at Technische Universität Darmstadt. Its technical roots include Walter Schäfer’s doctoral research on the Time-Shift-Time-of-Flight measurement technique. An early prototype was demonstrated at ACHEMA in 2012.
Officially Registered as ai quanton in 2013
The company was officially registered in 2013 under the exact name ai-quanton GmbH. The name ai-quanton dates back to that original registration and has been part of the company’s identity ever since.
An Unusual Name for an Early Idea
When the company was founded, the name sounded unusual. Yet the ambition behind it was already clear: to explore how artificial intelligence could help extract information from optical measurements of sprays and particles.
At that time, AI was much less visible in everyday industrial practice. Applying neural networks to spray measurement was difficult to finance, and our available budget did not support the computing resources and development work needed to pursue the idea.
Renewed AI Development in 2019
In 2019, ai-quanton was reactivated and resumed its AI development activities. More accessible tools, including Azure Machine Learning, TensorFlow and comparable platforms, made it practical to revisit the original ideas.
These tools lowered the barriers to experimenting with neural networks. This marked a renewed development phase for the company registered in 2013.
Our Continuing Direction
Today, we continue this work by developing hardware and software together. Our goal is to create measurement solutions that answer specific questions in spray research and support their use in practical applications.
